Ayurveda is an ancient Indian healing system that dates back thousands of years. It is based on beliefs that we are all part of the universe and our bodies are interconnected with the environment and cosmos. This is where the concept of an ayurvedic dosha body type comes from.
Ayurvedic medicine views the world as being made up of five major elements.
- Aakash (space),
- Jala (water),
- Prithvi (earth),
- Teja (fire), and
- Vayu (air)
A combination of the five elements, (space, air, fire, water, and earth) creates the three doshas of Vata, Kapha, and Pitta. These Ayurvedic body types are believed to be accountable for a person’s physical, psychological, and emotional well-being.
Dosha Body Type and the Elements
The three dosha are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, and are believed to be the building blocks of life. Each Dosha is made up of two elements, either water, air, fire, or earth, and has its own unique set of characteristics and qualities. Knowing your Dosha type can help you to better understand yourself and how to achieve balance in your life.
How to Determine Your Ayurvedic Dosha
There are a few different ways to determine your Ayurvedic Dosha type. One popular method is to take a questionnaire and answer questions about your physical and mental traits. Once you have identified your Dosha type, you can use the guidelines listed above to help you maintain balance and achieve optimal health. Another way, which is way more fun, is to turn that questionnaire into a dosha quiz! That’s what we have done, so why not take our dosha quiz now?

What is Vata Dosha?
Vata is made up of the elements of air and ether, and is known to be the lightest, most mobile, and most changeable of the three Ayurvedic Dosha types.
People with a Vata type are usually creative, fast-paced, energetic, and often flighty. They tend to be easily overwhelmed in the face of too many tasks, and can become easily distracted. Physically, Vata types have a tendency to be thin and light, with dry skin and hair.
Vata types do best when they maintain a consistent routine and create an environment that is grounding and calming. Eating regular meals, getting plenty of rest, and engaging in spiritual practices such as yoga are all beneficial for Vata types.
What is Pitta Dosha?
Pitta is made up of the elements of fire and water, and is the Ayurvedic Dosha that is associated with transformation and digestion.
People with a Pitta type are often ambitious, driven, and intense. They tend to have a fiery temper, but they are also strong-willed and determined. Physically, Pitta types have a medium build, with warm skin and reddish hair.
Pitta types should focus on keeping cool and avoiding getting too overheated. Eating cooling foods, engaging in calming activities, and getting plenty of rest are all important for maintaining balance.
What is Kapha Dosha?
Kapha is made up of the elements of earth and water, and is the Ayurvedic Dosha that symbolizes stability and structure.
People with a Kapha type are usually stable, reliable, and grounded. They tend to be slow to act, but are also loyal and gentle. Physically, Kapha types have a heavy build, with cool skin and thick hair.
Kapha types should focus on staying active and avoiding getting too stuck in a rut. Eating light foods, engaging in physical activities, and creating structure in their life are all key for maintaining balance.
